Meet Carly

Writer | Researcher | Creator
I’m Carly—a writer, researcher, and lifelong student of how people understand one another. My work focuses on the intersection of communication, culture, and technology, especially as AI changes the way we speak, write, and show up in the world.

I earned my PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilizations and have spent years studying how different cultures build trust and communicate meaning. I’ve also lived a dozen lives—flight attendant, doula, artist, founder, professor—which means I’ve witnessed human communication in its most tender, chaotic, and revealing forms.

At Buck Stone Studio, I bring these experiences together through essays, research, workshop and creative expressions that explore voice, authenticity, and the future of human connection. I’m here to help people communicate more thoughtfully and more truthfully—without losing the humanity at the center of it all.
Why "Buck Stone"?
Buck Stone represents the intersection of strength and creativity—the solid foundation (stone) that supports bold, even risky design choices (buck). It's about taking creative risks while maintaining practical functionality.

The name also reflects my personal journey as a designer. Drawing from my surname, Buxton, I wanted to create something that felt both grounded and gender-neutral—a studio identity that could stand on the strength of the work itself rather than preconceptions. Buck Stone embodies the balance I strive for: the reliability and timelessness of stone with the dynamic, forward-moving energy of bucking convention.
